This is one of those cross-genre stories that starts off well, but then succumbs to the Romance formula that ultimately makes the book unbearable for those who do not enjoy the romance genre.

The protagonist is a girl suffering from depression and stress after the car accident in which she was driving and her best friend was killed. The treatment of her feelings and disconnectedness from life rings true, and is one of the strong points of this story. The girl, Julia, has fallen so far behind in her classes that she is in danger of being transferred to a school for kids with behavioral and other problems. The school's most popular boy, Evan, offers to tutor her back to grade level, and a hesitant maybe-romance begins. There are questions about why he notices and likes her all of a sudden, and why she has these vivid dreams about altered versions of her accident and her best friend. These are answered in the second part of the book, which veers off into Sci-Fi.

The Sci-Fi premise here isn't at all bad-- it's actually pretty creative. But it's at this point that Julia devolves into crying, being torn between Evan and another boy (in a pushme-pullyou romance-genre approach that imparts emotional whiplash), and making impossibly stupid decisions. Between the crying and the bad choices, you really get kind of fed up with her.

When the ending cliffhangers as a setup for a sequel... that's when you will regret having stuck with the story.

If you like the romance genre and especially enjoy it in a YA setting, you'll probably find this a captivating read and be excited that there's more.

If romance is not for you, you'll be more likely to find the main character frustrating and the last fourth of the story will be dominated by that feeling rather than the plot itself. I found myself skimming faster and faster at that point, and the dangling conclusion was just the final straw.

I love good science fiction. This book is fantastic science fiction! Putting the puzzle together wasn't too difficult because Denise sprinkled little nuggets here and there throughout the first half. When the "twist" arrived I was happy I was correct, happy she went there, and even happier that I knew things were about to get crazy!

Here starts out like a very typical YA romance novel girl bullied by other students while dealing with a personal drama that keeps her from being a social butterfly. Then girl meets boy and everything changes. When I say everything, I mean it!

Here takes a hard right turn into science fiction and does not look back. It was very unexpected! I. Loved. It. So much so that I couldn't put the book down and read it one sitting. The drama that ensues is both dizzying and fascinating.

Here is very well thought out. Julia, our protagonist, is highly relatable. The others characters are, too! Pay close attention to the nuances. With this series you're getting a little bit of Fringe, one of my favorite TV series of all time. And that makes me happy! Very happy!

Thank you, Denise, for another addictive series! Five out of five stars!
If I could give this book more stars, I absolutely would!!! I can't even put into words how I truly feel about this book. Denise has such an amazing ability to completely take over my mind with her writing. I really felt like I knew these characters and lived their story with them. I could not put this book down. And once it was over, I immediately picked up the next book (There).

Julia is a young girl who is depressed about the car accident she had which led to her best friend's death. In school, she starts to notice she has caught the eye of a popular guy who has never given her a second look. This becomes strange to her, among other things, and she starts to want answers. I can't say much more without spoilers. But this is a MUST READ!!
Here by Denise Grover Swank was an interesting book that I was not sure I would like since I do not read a lot of books in this genre (sci-fi, YA, romance). I enjoyed reading it and was able to finish it within a day. I am really interested in the idea of alternate universes so that really caught my attention. I feel a lot of sympathy for the main character and also some frustrations with her decisions until I remind myself that she is only a teenager. I found the story intriguing and liked most of the characters in it. The book ended on a cliffhanger but I am looking forward to reading the second book to see how everything is resolved.
This is a phenomenal YA Sci-Fi read! Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. make sure you have time to read this book because you probably won't get much sleep once you start it.

The story centers on Julia who recently lost her best friend Monica in a horrible car accident. Julia was the driver and she is dealing with the guilt of surviving. Julia is also struggling with memories that don't seem her own and of another life that is not her. if things can't get any weirder, the resident hottie, Evan starts paying attention to her.

As Evan helps Julie deal with the grief and unexplained memories, they begin to grow close and Julie is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, all is not what it seems. Soon Julie learns that there is no world out their like hers and that a Monica still exist. Evan convinces Julie to come to his world to see her died best friend.

As soon as Julie enters this alternative universe, she finds herself public enemy number 1. She enters a world that is vastly different then hers and controlled by a suspect government bent on destroying Juile.

This book is one adrenaline ride from page to page. As Julie has to navigate a world completely different then her own, she has to put her trust in two people whose intentions may not be honorable in order to survive.
